Subject: WHERE have all the Chessplayers GONE??

Message:
Greeting everyone, if you are here, that is?! What I would like to know, with the forum being so unlively this week, is where have you all been?
This is more than simple nosiness, and goes back to my time as a Tournament Director and organizer, when I noted that you cannot get as many tournament entrants during the Summer it seems. At least around Omaha. And further, attendance may also be down during the fall if there is a particularly good Football game of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. (Tho many diehard Player+fans will show up with a radio & earpiece).
So to further my demographic understanding of Where The Chess Players GO ... when they are not around... In this case, not around Here at GK forums ...
I'd like to ask ... What you been doin' ?

Me ... I've had a stiff fingers week, just getting limbered up a bit more now.

For me

Message:
My work has been keeping me busy. As a chef we are now making our spring and summer menus plus our regular work. Also my wife and I are remodeling our home making a new master bedroom which we have now completely finished today. We started this project in November of 07. Now time to move everything. Also I run the team Chess Players of the World. So finding team matches and such is another major task. I see alot of free time here soon and participating more here at GK. Cheers Eddie

I don't typically contibute much anyway,

Craig, but I check in most days. It's interesting how the conversation on the forums ebbes and flows. I would have thought it too soon for spring to be taking people out of doors and away from their computers. Maybe not. It's still pretty much cold in Denver although we've seen a few balmy days.

well, I'm taking "Experimental Methods and Measurements" this semester so even the campus chess club hasn't seen much of me. This is a class notorious among all UTA mechanical/aerospace/biomedical engineers mainly because of the lab reports. So you might not see much of me this entire semester.

Thanks ! ...

... for the replies guys.

Walt: It's funny about that around Omaha. In the Autumn it turns 40 or 50 and we are all in coats or jackets. But coming out of the Winter (a lot of sub-zero here this month) into early Spring, and it turns 30 degrees like this week ... and it feels fine to walk about in your shirtsleeves & comment how Nice it is. :) I noticed You got 50's instead tho.

Eddie: It does sound like you have a lot going on with 2 special projects and the Team. It seems work is often a factor in Chess time. But the Team factor is one I had not considered, and wonder if many of the players liking Forum posting may also be many of the Team Captains. As well as team players who may use some of their posting time on Team Threads.

doctor_knight & chessnovice School does seem to be a big factor limiting Chess time. In general, and I know another 4 or 5 players who have said it is especially so for them recently. I can relate to the time it may take for any classes containing the words Statistics or Measurement :)

Soren ...Holiday in France, and you did not stop by to take me along ?! You must remember next time! :)
But I hope your trip was safe and entertaining. Perhaps with some Chess !? Or if not,
then plenty of "eat, drink and be merry" instead ~!

Chess news:

Bu bashed again -- Vasily Ivanchuk managed to keep Veselin Topalov at bay and maintain a one point lead with three to play at the MTel Masters being held at the Central Military Club in Sofia. Scores: 1 Ivanchuk (Ukraine) 6/7; 2 Topalov (Bulgaria) 5; 3-4 Cheparinov (Bulgaria), Radjabov (Azerbaijan) 3.5; 5 Aronian (Armenia) 2; 6 Bu (China) 1. The game of the day, indeed one of the games of the year was played by Teimour Radjabov who reduced Bu Xiangzhi to 1/7. T Radjabov - Bu Xiangzhi; 4th M-Tel Masters (7) Sofia; Slav a6; 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3 a6 5.Nf3 b5 6.c5 g6 7.Ne5 Bg7 8.Be2 0–0 9.0–0 Nfd7 (Black wants to free himself with e7-e5 so White rules it out with his next move) ...

Bu... there's a surprise -- Veselin Topalov can still make it four first prizes in a row at the MTel Masters but after a shock defeat at the hands of Bu Xianhgzhi in the penultimate round he must defeat Teimour Radjabov and hope that his analytical assistant and fellow Bulgarian Ivan Cheparinov can inflict a first defeat on Vasily Ivanchuk. Topalov has won every MTel chess event in his home city of Sofia since its inception. In recent years he has made many magnificent comebacks. However, after winning for the fifth time in round eight he went astray against Bu who had yet to win a game but took the chances he was offered. Vasily Ivanchuk started with five straight wins but has looked increasingly tentative and ...

Goalkeeper on the attack -- The MTel Masters ended in triumph for Vasily Ivanchuk who scored his sixth victory in the final round to reach an unbeaten 8/10 and dash the lingering hopes of Veselin Topalov who finished 1.5 point behind. Topalov's analytical assistant Ivan Cheparinov went for the win with the white pieces against Ivanchuk in the last round but was well beaten. Nigel Short once famously said that he never bothered preparing for Ivanchuk because: 'he can play anything' and so it proved. The Ukrainian chess genius chose the Sicilian Paulsen and when confronted with a dangerous looking chess novelty he reflected briefly and then refuted it. The Cheparinov’s queenside was soon full of holes and his king ...
