Subject: Chess tattoos

Message:
I have a tattoo of a knight on my arm - the picture is in my profile.

I was wondering if anybody else had any or knew anybody who has any. I haven't come across anyone else but surely I'm not the only one.

I know somebody who got a certain poker hand (Jack-Ten) tattooed on his arm. I feel that mine is less "tacky", although people approach mine with mixed results.

Dan, I have never seen or heard anyone actually having a Chess tattoo before, during my whole 35+ years around the tournament crowd. But now that you bring it up, I am a bit surprised to realize that. Perhaps it just doesn't come up during conversation, if not visibly displayed or noticeable.

Seems like an interesting idea & your Knight looks good ... maybe more players will go in for it if they see yours. Doesn't seem tacky at all to me. Personally, I see it as expressive Art, like the game itself.
Are you thinking of adding to the "set" ?

Knights on the upper arm ... right hand side black knight, so obviously the queen's knight. Another on the other arm is the king's knight. Place bishops on the shoulders, king on the left cheek, queen on the right, rooks on each forearm, a row of 8 pawns across the chest - and you'll always be ready for a game!

I hope i haven't sarted anything...

Thanks all. I don't think I'm getting any more chess tattoos - I'm studying to be a teacher and that is a profession that frowns on visible tattoos. I do want my next tattoo to probably deal with a Christian-related theme.

I do think that more players should get a chess tattoo. At the very least, it makes for an interesting conversation piece

I've always liked the idea of tattoos on the palms of your hands. I've recently considered getting the "with compensation" or even "white is slightly better" symbols done on my palms.

To answer the question, I don't think I could get a chess tattoo. I like the game, but not to that degree.

The only kind of tattoo I've considered getting is something along the lines that Tyler Florence (from Food Network) got. He says his favorite is this tattooed script that he got from a Buddhist monk. It sounds cool.

But then I figured that the ink probably has some kind of metal in it. If I ever have to undergo an MRI, I'd rather it be as painless as possible.

My stepson is a tattoo artist

at Denver's oldest tattoo shop. After reading this thread I asked him if he'd ever run across a chess related tattoo. He said no, but agreed that it was kind of surprising since chess piece iconograph is pretty interesting.

That was a few days ago. He came home from work yesterday and said someone had come in and asked for a large pawn on his back. Interesting timing and interesting choice of images.

And actually, this thread has got me thinking.....

Chess news:

The evolution of chess -- "The trail of chess leads back to about A.D. 500. There we strike a barrier behind which research has not penetrated." — A Short History of Chess, by Henry Davidson. Nobody knows who invented chess. All we know is that during the sixth century, inhabitants of India were playing chaturanga, a precursor of the modern game of chess. One legend has it that Adam invented the game to console himself for the loss of his son Abel. Another has it that a Buddhist priest invented it as a bloodless substitute for war. Yet probably chess grew as music and poetry grew, gradually adding one beauty after another. For centuries the chess rules were modified. Initially, the pawn could only advance one square, instead of two, on its first move. The current law on promoting a pawn when ...

Telegraph chess: Revenge is sweet -- Sixteen year old Magnus Carlsen shares the lead of the Corus Wijk aan Zee Chess Festival with Levon Aronian as both chess players won for the second time to maintain a perfect score. Vishy Anand, Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov have yet to win a game between them and Teimour Radjabov, another member of the younger generation is the only chess player on 1.5/2. For the second time in a row Teimour Radjabov’s King’s Indian withstood the ultimate test as Kramnik tried for 79 moves, unsuccessfully, to exploit an extra pawn. Michael Adams held on against Peter Leko after choosing to enter an endgame with queen and three kingside pawns against queen and four kingside pawns. Adams checked the white king all over the board and by move 99 Leko had ...

Telegraph chess: A clash of bishops -- The curse of the opposite coloured bishops struck in the third round of Group A at the Corus Wijk aan Zee Chess Festival. All seven games were drawn and four ended in endgames with opposite coloured bishops and there was no point continuing. Opposite bishops produce drawish endgames because the bishops can easily blockade enemy passed pawns as the opposing bishop cannot lend support. They can also defend their own pawns easily and be of little offensive use if the opponent’s pawns are on the opposite coloured square. Even if one side is a pawn or sometimes two pawns to the good the game cannot be won and there are even some positions with three extra pawns where a blockade can be set up. There was only one very long game as Teimour Radjabov had to cling on ...
